Fetal Echocardiogram
With an incidence of 6-10/1000 live births, congenital heart disease is the most common structural anomaly in children. With advances in the ultrasound imaging, most of these congenital heart diseases can be diagnosed right when the baby is the mothers womb. We offer a comprehensive approach to the patient including facilities for diagnosis, counselling and treatment for various types of heart problems. We work in close liaison with the allied departments like obstetrics and gynecology, radiology, genetics, cardiac surgery and neonatology. We strive to create a smooth system of referral and feedback by working in close association with all medical professionals involved in doing antenatal scans. Dr. Prashant Bobhate has undergone a specialised training in fetal cardiology under the mentorship of Dr. Lisa Horneberger at Stollery Children’s Hospital, Edmonton, Canada.
Fetal Echocardiography is a highly specialised form of anomaly scan where a detailed evaluation of the heart is carries out. It involves scanning the fetal heart from around 18-20 weeks’ pregnancy. The entire structure of the heart (chamber, valves, blood vessels and partitions (Septum) can be visualized by the technique. The heartbeat of the foetus can be evaluated and the pumping efficiency of the heart can be assessed. This enables diagnosis of various forms of birth defects of the heart (congenital heart defects) and heart beat disorders (rhythm problems) in the foetus.
